The SHTF in Western NC. The Govt. Is Making Everything Worse.

There are scenarios we all try to prepare for, like long-term power outages, terrible storms, or other disastrous events. But as Western North Carolina demonstrates, there are some things so wildly unexpected that you just can’t prep for them. The SHTF in Western NC almost two months ago, and people are still in survival mode.

For those saying, “Well, the government will help them; that’s what we pay taxes for.” No, they won’t. In fact, they’re making a terrible situation even worse. It’s so bad that one has to wonder, is this mere incompetence, or is there something darker at play? Let’s take a closer look at this SHTF playing out in our own nation, one that most of the country is completely unaware of.

The information in this article is based on first-person accounts from the people who live there. Not every person in Western North Carolina is having the same experience. These are stories from the hardest-hit areas. These things aren’t all being reported in the MSM, and in fact, some are reporting the opposite. After the outrageous propaganda voiced there during the election, I know who I find more credible.

What happened?

This isn’t my first article on the topic. I went into detail here and here, including video documentaries.

Western North Carolina and Eastern Tennessee are part of the Appalachian Mountains. The elevation on many of the mountains is more than 6000 feet. If you live all the way up there, far from the rivers that run through the valleys of that area, flood damage would be pretty unexpected. It’s 350 miles or more from the coast, so a hurricane is also completely unexpected. Historically, Western NC has gotten some wind and rain when there are hurricanes nearby, some trees have been knocked down, and a bit of damage was done, but nothing like Helene has ever happened in these mountains.

Hurricane Helene was a full-on catastrophic disaster. There was flooding everywhere, even up in the mountains. The rivers running through the area flooded quickly. Entire forests full of trees came down, and landslides devastated the mountains.

Entire homes were completely washed away, with residents inside them. Other homes were filled with thick, toxic mud and sludge. Cars disappeared into the river, found in ruins, miles away from where they had been parked. An almost unfathomable 1400 landslides wreaked havoc on the Appalachians in Western NC and Eastern TN. Here are the stats:

The storm and its aftermath caused 1,400 landslides and damaged over 160 water and sewer systems, at least 6,000 miles (9,650 kilometers) of roads, more than 1,000 bridges and culverts and an estimated 126,000 homes, the budget office said. Some 220,000 households are expected to apply for federal assistance.

Many of those homes are completely uninhabitable right now. People are living in near-apocalyptic conditions, and no amount of physical preps could have helped them. When your entire house is washed away or filled with sludge, most, if not all, of your preps will be ruined.

Let me be extremely clear. People in Appalachia are made of different stuff. They are resilient and resourceful and a large number of them are preppers. But the scale of this disaster, an estimated $53 billion dollars worth of damage, is not something you can prep for. It’s the luck of the draw whether one of those 1400 landslides hits your house or the one next door. Homes that were not victim to landslides had other problems, like wind damage and falling trees. Very few people were unscathed.

Many, many roads were so damaged or covered in debris that they were completely impassible. So, even if you still had a car, you weren’t going anywhere.

The “immediate” government response

The response to this by both the federal and state governments has been laughably bad – at least if you have a dark sense of humor. For all the politicians expounding on what they’re going to do, very little has actually happened that is of help. Helene landed in the mountains on the evening of September 26th.

FEMA said that they had people there before Helene made landfall. Perhaps they did, but survivors said that there was no sign of them until an entire week after the storm. They did not go door to door, and search and rescue arrived a few days after that.

One thousand active duty soldiers were also sent to help with recovery efforts, and they were deployed on October 2, also a week after the storm.

Let’s be honest. After 7 days trapped in the mud or water, this was not search and rescue. This was search and recovery.

Even worse, FEMA has spoken out against people who are there, living through this disaster, sharing information, calling it disinformation.

And despite video evidence, many folks have chosen to believe the government and not their fellow citizens.

The real heroes

The real heroes and early responders, like in any SHTF scenario, were the neighbors and the locals. There are dozens of stories about neighbors frantically digging people out of the mud or pulling them from the river. Volunteers arrived quickly, within a day or two, and began to help, using personal helicopters and small planes to find stranded people. They delivered medications, EpiPens for all reactions to the hornets that were stirred up, generators, fuel, food, and water. Mule teams from around the country soon were brought to join the effort.

These volunteers and neighbors worked tirelessly to help Appalachia days before “official” help arrived. If not for them, the death toll would have been far worse. These folks spent their own money to provide assistance, help that rightly should have been provided by our tax dollars.

The Amish deployed men to come and quickly build beautiful tiny houses to get roofs over peoples’ heads before the snow began to fly.

Some volunteers are still there, doing everything they can to assist. Though it has mostly disappeared from the national news cycle, this disaster is far from over. Emergency RVs has managed to donate 30 RVs to families in need.

In the first days after the disaster, Elon Musk rapidly deployed StarLink equipment and made communications available for free. First responders used the technology and it was also distributed to homes throughout the region.

Conditions now

Almost two months after the storm, it still looks like a bomb went off. If a picture is worth a thousand words, then video is worth a million.

If you go to Western North Carolina, in the small towns, it looks positively apocalyptic. Here’s a video taken by someone local I’ve been following during this event. She is a film director by trade, which is why it looks and sounds so professional.

This video shows some of the destruction in Asheville, formerly a tourist hub.

Here is another video that shows the havoc that still remains, almost two months later.

The stench of death became familiar in some of the hardest hit areas, where human and animal remains had landed and began to decompose. Many of those remains have not yet been recovered.

Human remains are being found and civilians have no way to identify them.

This Bible survived the storm and has been encased as a symbol of hope for the region.

The debris piles you’re seeing in these videos are absolutely enormous. Here’s a photo for scale.

How do you even deal with that much debris as a civilian? You can’t burn it because there could still be remains in there. The official death toll number for Appalachia is 93. Locals say that it is not even close.

The person with this Rumble channel has been shooting video every single day to document the ongoing crisis.

If it weren’t for Elon Musk buying Twitter, and turning it into X, nobody would know about any of this. Even with all this video evidence it’s still being called “fake news.” In many cases, the videos are being removed from TikTok.

How the government is actively making things worse

In 1986, Ronald Reagan famously said, The nine most terrifying words in the English language are ‘I’m from the government and I’m here to help.’”

The folks in Appalachia are learning just how true that is. Here is a video from a local about how FEMA is responding to the disaster.

But it gets even worse. FEMA has a huge number of RVs that could be distributed, and they’re not doing it. In two months, only 4 RVs have been given to families for shelter. Look how many are sitting there, empty and unused while citizens sleep on the ground in tents.

Meanwhile FEMA is boasting about the trailers nobody is getting.

A FEMA whistleblower has said that the organization has “no timeline” for doling out the trailers. Are you wondering why? Shawn Hendrix, who has been on the ground since Day 1 working tirelessly to help, explains.

And just in case you think the housing situation couldn’t get any worse, there are one hundred donated tiny houses sitting empty because they “aren’t up to code,” according to authorities. They are literally making people move out of them and go back to living in tents in freezing cold weather.

If this is an example of our tax dollars at work, I want a refund. This is living proof that FEMA could be disbanded, and hardly anyone but illegal immigrants would be inconvenienced.

However much you may have despised our government and its bureaucracy in the past, you didn’t hate it enough.

Children are being removed from their families.

And just when you think things can’t possibly get any worse, the Department of Social Services stepped in, removing children from their families because of their living conditions. Some folks are dismissive and say this isn’t really happening, but it is, and the kids are being separated and sent to foster care hours away. Their parents may not have vehicles after the disaster, so they can’t even go visit them. Here are two videos regarding this.

And here is an example of this happening. It’s incredibly disturbing.

More details on the case are here.

And there’s this one, in which the mother may lose her son permanently if she can’t go visit him hours away, with no car.

I’m personally convinced that this is a land grab, but this article is already quite long. I’ll cover that tomorrow. Right now, it’s the human element of this SHTF disaster.

How you can help

There are many different ways to help. Here are some of the people on the ground I’ve been following on X.

Emergency RV, as mentioned, has gotten 30 donated trailers to families with no homes. If you have one that you’d like to donate, you can contact them and they’ll even arrange for someone to drive it to its destination.

For information, you can follow Matt Van Swol and his wife, Erin Derham. They are posting daily from Asheville the things going on in the community. They’re extremely careful about checking their information.

Margo from NC has been posting first-hand information since the disaster began.

Shawn Hendrix, as I mentioned before, has worked tirelessly to help the community. He has brought a lot of attention to the situation and pulled off some miracles. If you want to make a monetary donation that you can be confident will be put to good use, here are some links for doing so. I trust Shawn implicitly as he has regularly shown the results of the money he has received.

If you have some donations you would like to mail in, I have an address. They are not taking most clothing right now, but are looking for outerwear for children and adults, blankets, sleeping bags, and camping gear.

  • You can also order supplies from Amazon and have it sent there. Here are a few recommendations.
  • These winter sleeping bags are on sale for only $20.
  • Feminine hygiene supplies like pads and tampons are needed.
  • Things to keep hands and feet warm would be extremely welcome.
  • No-rinse body wipes would be helpful for hygiene.
  • Propane heaters that can safely be used indoors could potentially save someone’s life. My recommendations are the Little Buddy and the Mr. Heater. If you are feeling extra generous, this hose assembly allows the heaters to be connected to bigger, barbecue sized propane tanks.
  • Winter gear such as gloves, coats, heavy socks, and hats are also welcome.

Manpower would also be appreciated if you can. Contact Shawn Hendrix, above, to get more information.

Please share these stories far and wide. Don’t let Appalachia be forgotten.

I’m appalled that our FEMA tax dollars are housing illegal immigrants in fancy hotels and giving them thousands of dollars to get settled, while our own people are living in third world conditions.

Insurance won’t pay for flood damage and only 5% of the people there have flood insurance. Most of these homes were well above the previous flood plain, and in areas not necessarily covered by the National Flood Insurance Program. This wasn’t negligence on their parts.

There’s nobody to help but us.

What are your thoughts?

I have more information coming tomorrow about the red tape keeping people homeless.

Did you know the situation was still so bad in Western NC? Have you ever visited this part of Appalachia? What do you think of the governmental response?

Let’s discuss it in the comments section.

  • I am disgusted & furious after reading this. How horrible. I have not heard Trump or his team mention anything about immediately looking into either. Has anyone else?

    But yes, defund FEMA. Yesterday.

    • first off, this is absolutely horrendous and unforgivable! God bless those who have been and still continue to help. second, those of you who are on TruthSocial or Twitter X, need to find elon and trumps address for them, and send videos and messages to them!! put this situation FRONT AND CENTER, I’m sure they read their platforms all the time. make them aware of the situation regarding children removed from their families, where are they being taken to, etc. fourth – WHY are there not more trailers and campers being taken to the areas needed, why are they still sitting in the FEMA storage lots? if they cant get thru some roads, how about setting up a campground locally and bringing families to the campground> WINTER IS SETTING IN, these people CANNOT SURVIVE IN TENTS ALL WINTER! THEY NEED SHELTERS NOW, not in the spring/summer!!!! Daisy, thank you and your people for posting these things, videos etc. keep getting the info out there, post constantly, write your congress people, state govt etc, post this stuff on Epoch Times, Durden Dispatch etc. and yes there IS evidence that these storms were manifested or manipulated to be as destructive as they were…and yes, it is a land grab..look whats sitting in those mtns = lithium, tons of it, quartz – tons.. so our govt has been involved in all of this, but are still denying. PEOPLE ARENT STUPID…just slow to want to believe something so horrid from our govt! WAKE UP PEOPLE, govt is NOT taking care of US….I too am a NCarolinian, and sick to see such suffering in our folks and animals. and you are hearing nothing more thru the media from TN, NC, GA, FL etc. they’re all forgotten….we can only hope and pray for them all, those that help, and that trumps crew will change things and help them recover…..God bless everyone!!!

  • This is absolutely heartbreaking and infuriating. So our government can get supplies and money to other countries half way around the world but they can’t take care of the American citizens on our own soil? This is obviously a land grab just like it was in Hawaii. They created both with weather manipulation. It’s bad enough that they have been incompetent but this is blatant evil. Do away with FEMA and many other programs that do more harm than help. Thank you for sharing this and the links so we can help.

  • As a survivor of Hurricane Michael, I can attest to the following: the faith based organizations and Publix were the first to arrive and help people. FEMA showed up along with the Red Cross, six weeks later and were useless. FEMA did nothing except tell us “you have insurance; go get an SBA loan.” They were beyond useless and arrogant to boost. Neighbors helped neighbors.

  • Daisy, this is horrendous in so many ways. Thank you for this extensive reporting.

Having said that, I do have some insight on working with FEMA. My MIL lived in a beautiful riverside trailer home when a hundred year flood wiped her out. FEMA was helpful then. Within a year, unbelievably, ANOTHER 100 year flood hit. After that, FEMA offered help, but NOT at that property because it was clearly in a flood plain. She owned property elsewhere and FEMA assisted her in getting into a doublewide home there. She was able to sell her riverside property to someone who wanted it for a camping spot, but nothing could be built there because of the flood potential.

  • My brother told me he went south with my brother-in-law to WNC to see what they could do to help, and things did not look like those videos we’ve been seeing–they looked normal. We know there are indeed disaster areas, so I wish we could get an honest assessment of the damage, and honest building inspection for realistic safety–optimal for such adverse conditions.
And the children were not stolen to protect the children. They were taken to traffic them.
Those government monsters need killing–but that is what they are hoping for. If we kill them, we will lose.

    • It’s really crazy. There are some areas that are basically untouched and others that are decimated. It really just depends on if there was a landslide or if the house was by the river. Quite a few of the videos I shared are from folks I’ve gotten to know personally during this crisis. There are specific towns that were exceedingly hard hit, such as Swannanoa and Chimney Rock – which were all but wiped off the map.

As for the children, I so hope that you are wrong. But…

      • If all of you will go to Dave Hodges on rumble….. The common sense show…..
He told all about the land grab.he is a Christian and did a complete investigation into the corrupt gov. He gave the facts on who, when, why about the theft and take over of all this land.he also tells you about what’s coming and what the gov has planned in general for the US.take it to the bank you can believe what he says.

    • I am inclined to agree that we who are not in the government cult would be charged with hostage taking and kidnapping and whatever else they have a mind to trump up, but when my only son was kidnapped at 8 1/2 years old, and returned 2 days before his 19th birthday as a full blown communist, I know they are being trafficked. The whole DCFS/CPS scam is a cover for Satanic pedophiles and eugenicist. Those who use force and fraud so that they can “Play god” with other peoples lives.

  • It would be good to make an Amazon wish list to let people see how many of an item are wanted and how many bought, and have items chosen automatically sent to the sponsoring organization.

  • Thank you for this article. I was wondering how the communities were faring after Hurricane Helene. And much information has left the headlines.

  • You said, “Historically, Western NC has gotten some wind and rain when there are hurricanes nearby, some trees have been knocked down, and a bit of damage was done, but nothing like Helene has ever happened in these mountains.”

First, this damage was not caused by a hurricane. Helene had been downgraded to a tropical storm before it reached Georgia. It was also preceded by several days of heavy rain in the region before Tropical Storm Helene reached North Carolina.

Second, flooding is not uncommon in Appalachia. There tend to be at least two major floods every decade. Just in the last eight years, there have been three; the 2016 flood in West Virginia, the 2022 Kentucky flood, and now the 2024 flood that hit western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee.

Third, similar conditions occurred in 1916 when Asheville and the surrounding areas were destroyed by floods; several days of heavy rain followed by a hurricane that made landfall in South Carolina.

    https://www.ourstate.com/flood-of-1916/

Of course, the response of the federal government to this catastrophe has been horrific, but it shouldn’t surprise those who have been paying attention for the last three decades, if not longer. Perhaps the lesson to be learned from this is that it’s past time we the people rediscover the Tenth Amendment, and begin enacting nullification laws that will allow the states to refuse to cooperate with unconstitutional federal programs, which could include withholding federal taxes, putting some of those funds into state programs that could assist citizens in times of need.

    • Interesting fact: all the trees fell from East to West. We have shallow soil over huge boulders. During heavy rainstorms trees will fall, but from West to East. Just a couple of miles from here, there stands a house that used to be surrounded by trees. Now they are ALL flat on the ground, about 2 acres of them all pointing to the West. In the 2 days preceding the big one we had over 9 inches of rain and then on September 27 another 12 inches (measured at my house, not the Asheville Airport.) The sound of the wind was horrendous. Even though Helene had been downgraded to a tropical storm, tornadoes were embedded.

  • Besides the horror and being so proud of the locals and volunteers, 3 things come to my mind.
    1) this feels an unnatural deluge, and there was another recently in Europe, I think in Spain. The volume, scale and speed of this makes me suspect it was malicious. I’m struggling to see these as “natural” disasters.
    2) what we heard from people on the ground who went to assist in Lahaina mirrors this situation too. FEMA and govt at all levels hindering rescue and aid more than helping. They prevented rescue boats from neighboring Oahu from docking to offload food and supplies, so people literally swam and snuck supplies in there!
    3) after the media attention was off Lahaina it was similarly forgotten, but for some loud and persistent voices at the local level who are making sure it is not. WNC needs the same. Those in NC especially need to make sure this doesn’t just go away.

  • This is absolutely heartbreaking and disgusting at the same time. I know the powers at play here but extremely difficult to fathom it in real time.
The people really in control (and I’m not speaking about the puppets in the white house) are horrible creatures to put it lightly. They are the ones causing all the wars around the planeT, putting in puppet governments, only showing the public with their controlled media what they want them to see and destroying cultures.

I saw an interesting documentary about this. It’s a 3 part series by Truthstream media.

Also, real estate mindset on YouTube has done an amazing job covering the situation and helping people and spread the word.

We must remember that this fucking government does not care about the people. NO MATTER WHO IS IN OFFICE!! We need to take the power back BEFORE it’s too late.

They are pure evil and control all the wealth, drugs, food supply, medical system, education, etc. They want wars and division amongst people and groups. They are extremely clever and have been researching human behavior for centuries.
Just take a look at what’s really going on……

  • the problem with the Libs is that they forget that REAL men live for adversity, that’s the HELL YEA in most men. the greater the problem is the more focused we are on solving the problem. it’s just ingrained in our psyche. it has been for millions of years. that’s why our species has not died out by now. in the middle ages it was called chivalry, sadly that’s a lost word now. it’s called redneck now, respect and service to others and no fucks given if some blue hair rainbow freak likes it or not.
sadly many will not understand this post.
practice CHIVALRY men, if you don’t know what it means- please look it up and help if you can.

  • If I want to send some sleeping bags, would I send them to the Crestview Baptist Church?
Thanks Daisy and thank you for all you do keeping us informed about this horrific scenario in North Carolina.

      • I called the church to find out their hours of operation so that Amazon could deliver my package. 9-5 if anybody is interested. I spoke with the pastor and he told me that they are in desperate need of supplies. Anything any of your readers can send would be so appreciated.

  • I just want it on record, in the wide open of the World Wide Web, to be known without ambiguity, that I love and trust in government and all her agent children.

  • I would suggest that everyone reading this article and the comments remember that what has happened in western North Carolina could just as easily happen to you. Whether you believe that what is happening can be stopped and turned around or not (I do not), and can and are helping those in NC in every way you can, you need to consider what you would do in a like situation. What preps you will need and where you can safely store them and still have access. Do not put all your prepper eggs in one basket. Cache things everywhere you can. Cooperate with others in your area that you know you can trust.

Things like what has happened in NC and other places already will continue to happen. And even if FEMA would do their job as they should, the money is simply not available to them to handle even one event like NC. Prepare now, because you will be on your own. And only possibly with help of others that are in the same situation or have been burned out on the events that are occurring now and will not have the financial, physical, or mental reserves and resources to come in and help again and again.

Just my sad and disillusioned opinion.

  • The worst part I’ve read is they are actually taking people’s children and parcelling them out to foster homes. And the parents have no say in the matter. I’m actually surprised that some of these CPS people haven’t been shot.

And as others have said defund and end FEMA.

  • Actually Trump was here before the NC National Guard or FEMA arrived. He made a generous donation and contacted Elon Musk who had 200 (I believe that’s the correct number) of Starlink systems delivered so that people could access the internet. Some people still don’t have internet and probably won’t for a long time. I only have internet because I’m running a hotspot through my phone.
I count myself blessed though. We live in the northeastern part of Henderson County near the Buncombe County line. The elevation is higher here (2200 feet) so we were spared most of the flooding except for washed out roads and mudslides. We had phone service after about 5 days (spotty) and power after 10. Three trees including an ancient Oak landed on my roof and rain poured into my living room in buckets. A huge poplar fell across the back of the house just 3 feet from my eldest son’s bed. So many trees came down on the roads that we couldn’t have left if we had wanted to.
So how is it that I feel so blessed? We are all safe and sound. No one was injured. We have a home that will soon have a new roof but just down the road a trailer washed away and the houses all have huge piles of debris and ruined possessions heaped near the road.
No, mainstream media is not telling the truth about the situation. FEMA has actually been an impediment to search and rescue. The body count is much greater than acknowledged. People have reported missing relatives that are not included in that count. Do you think for a minute that those who were homeless before the flooding are accounted for? No, they aren’t. It just breaks my heart that those people who were so vulnerable never had a chance. They were simply swept away in the raging torrent.
A couple of days ago, cadaver dogs indicated 7 bodies beneath a huge pile of trees and other debris. More than 30 men were trying to remove the trees but hardly made a dent in the massive tangle. They notified FEMA in hopes of getting some heavy equipment to help. When they returned the next day, the pile was on fire. Spontaneous combustion???
By the way, this was much worse than the flood of 1916. And yes we do have some disastrous flooding and landslides every few years and the Pigeon River periodically eats into the east bound lanes of I40 but NOTHING compared to this. Entire towns and villages have been washed away or buried in feet of mud. It will take decades to recover.
You may think I’m a nutcase but it looks like weather warfare to me. Western North Carolina is decidedly conservative except for Asheville. But soon the mainstream media will turn our attention to the next crisis: bomb cyclone in the Northwest, Russia / Ukraine war, Israel and everyone else in the Mid-east forever conflict, our bankrupt government, who knows… Do we remember the Lahaina firestorm? How about Santa Rosa? Funny how the houses burned but not the trees. Now just a distant memory. Does anyone care? When will the insanity end?

  • This nonsense about the tiny homes not being up to code seems made up. There is no such thing as a Federal building code. I’d be surprised if the state or county was behind this since I’ve not heard any complaints about them.

    • Is it? I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean to exclude that area. I didn’t think it was hit quite as hard.

I wish you the very best of luck.

  • Daisy: Thanks so much for this very informative article! My heart breaks for all these people! I hope the church address you provided accepts daily packages, as I shipped a ton of kids gloves and hats and socks there, which should arrive in the next day or two. I am guessing they have people handling the distribution? Blessings~

  • I have been hearing, seeing and reading so many comments from people all over the U.S. and it is amazing to see how many people think it is the government’s job to DO something.
Folks.. it is OUR JOB to do something.
    OURS!!

    • I have to disagree to some extent. Of course we bear responsibility for ourselves. But we also pay the taxes that fund FEMA and our municipalities. FEMA in particular is charged with helping Americans after a disaster, and this definitely qualifies.

Everyday people are doing as much as they can. They’re draining themselves of money to help. They’re doing what they’re able with the equipment available. There are resources there and they’re being “protected” from the needy by armed guards.

If we must pay taxes, then those taxes must pay for major repairs like our roads, utility systems, and shelters.

    • I’m sure he must have received it. He’s just one guy out there pitching in so likely isn’t caught up with emails and such. If you follow him on X, you will see that the donation has been put to amazingly good use.

Thank you for helping my fellow North Carolinians!

  • Based on YOUR recommendation, I sent $ to Shawn Hendricks to aid in the NC recovery. This is my 2nd msg to you. I received no acknowledgement of funds received. IS this normal or a scam? You whine about the government, you whine about society, you whine about cultural changes. What are you doing besides being another click bait, self serving, ma ipulative, money grubbing person EXACTLY like those that you whine about? PLEASE enlighten this ignorant soul. ( if you can, your probable response will be to block me) Have a great Thanksgiving.

    • Hello! I did reply to your comment previously. I’ll repeat the answer here.

Shawn doesn’t have an army of volunteers. He is organizing all this with his wife and has done an absolutely remarkable job.

It’s likely that they may not have replied about getting a donation – they are not only calling around to find campers, but also delivering them and hooking them up to utilities when possible. Shawn is incredibly hardworking and I can tell you for a fact he is not a scammer.

Thank you for helping out those folks who need it so desperately.
