Dear fellows,

The ambiance these days down here can’t be described with simple words. The USD price is rising practically day after day (and I mean the official rate), but most people are bravely resisting, seemingly in the widespread consensus that we will finally be free.

Sure, the usual hot airbags are having a field day with the situation, but most of the people know, and more importantly, SUPPORT the actions against the Cartel because everybody has been deeply affected.

In social media, memes and funny videos come and go. The Cuban spy machinery is full steam ahead. 70 illegal detentions in the last 4 days as of the time of this writing.

The most scared and hysterical are those caught with their hands dirty and their backside exposed. Like the guy who stole 3 billion dollars to build a country-wide train, and not even a land movement was done. Talking about flammable tails. (malicious grin)

I haven’t slept so peacefully in months. It is really the light at the end of a very dark, very ugly, and very dangerous and cold tunnel.

The people finally have a little bit of hope.

This being said, most people seem to be slowly accepting the fact that things are finally going to change for the better.

And, FINALLY…people are preparing, very slowly because of the economy, but prepping nonetheless, one sardine can, a package of pasta, or a sugar package at a time. Most of us have already accepted that “something” is heading our way. It is a matter of time.

There is a whole package of measures imposed by the bus driver, and they will likely impact our economy even more. One video after another is being released. Each one is even more bizarre than the previous one. Somehow embarrassing, indeed, for a Venezuelan. The only ones still “supporting” are those receiving a handout, which is soon to disappear once they use the “decrees” for “external conmotion state”, and that money is used to pay the foreign “keepers”.

I have talked to some of my closer friends about the latest events. The general consensus is that whatever happens will bring along consequences in normal life, but they hope the disruption is minimal.

As part of the consensus, the general impression is that it will be a long-lasting presence: the stubborn reluctance of the capos to give up is what will finally unchain the total solution.

Amazingly, it seems that the shipments haven´t stopped. Everybody is waiting for the actions to start.

There are many attempts to deceive the public.

I have seen a couple of people here and there carrying big packages (the big bag of 24 kilos) of cornmeal or pasta. Meaning they are stocking up. Day after day, strange fires and explosions, like the mysterious aircraft, a Lear 55, that exploded on the track in the international airport in Caracas: this website is 100% controlled by the Party, and you can read their version here. On the other hand, another version issued by a digital independent newspaper says that this is what really happened.

Another explosion in a fireworks factory (managed by a military official who is linked to the ruling party) destroyed over 400 homes in Maracaibo.

All the analysis done by journalists and specialists who really know the scenario, what is really happening (which explains the hysterical reactions like the one that had Pres. Petro from Colombia and that made Mr. Landau revoke his US visa), and what the real underlying threat is. He is so sure that even before the dust settles, he´s the next one to go down. That is a very complex situation.

The idea of using chubby ladies or elderly gentlemen to exhibit an image of “war of the people”, as if they were Ukraine defending against a foreign “invader,” is practically hilarious. The fighters will not be anything like these. It´s all a clumsy attempt to deceive the public using their social media network. We all know that the real fighters to defend the Cartel are foreign guerrillas and convicts in disguise, and they will fight fiercely, mercilessly, shooting whatever and whoever is moving into the streets.

July 28th 2024 is going to look like a picnic compared to what they are planning, now covered with a “decree”. Those who are foolish enough to point a rusty 1980s FAL or some other outdated training gun at someone else are nothing but cannon fodder. I would be surprised if they even receive a couple of magazines. One of them even shot members of his own group for reasons that we may never know. Everything is kept under a veil of darkness and opacity.

In the meantime, we are taking it easy.

There are recent lessons from history where these sorts of conflicts, which we are not used to having in South America, at least not to this degree, and some people believe that could lead to a Balkanization of the region. My opinion is, it won´t happen: the largest neighboring country (Brazil) is practically frozen in panic and very likely won´t move a finger. Especially not after they accused the former President Bolsonaro, a right-wing republican who combated the communist-like party led by Da Silva, who was in jail after a corruption/malversation scandal.

The situation is so utterly complex that even the Sandinist Revolution aftermath and consequences are still affecting several countries that chose to band with Nicaragua. Word in the street is that the very close ties with the dictatorship in Nicaragua led to the repressive and aggressive attitude towards the civilians resisting the Party´s rule. There are “air bridges” between several countries since Hugo´s era, and reports that foreign accents with national uniforms are increasingly common in those countries. Kind of a common practice when you want to control social turmoil violently, without having to face any consequences later. The perpetrators will be back in their original countries before the blood of the victims over the asphalt has dried up.

It is incredible now that the Cartel is asking for “new elections” or, as a second option, to allow a safe passage to an “exile” to Turkey. Given the past experiences, the option Nr. 1 was immediately rejected by Washington. The 2nd option wasn´t fully accepted, either. The actual administration is not conceding anything. The war decree will allow the Party to seize whatever they feel like: buildings, goods, supplies, everything. It is not like they needed any formal paperwork. They already did it many times.

But sure, you won´t read about this in shameful reports like the recent one published by the woke media, the NY Times. They never mentioned dates like Jul 28th, 2024, and the fact that the election results were never respected.

What I regret the most is that some degree of destruction will be in place. That means money lost forever, just because a guy´s ego who believed he could do as he pleased and dragged a lot of people behind…including the thugs who saw the opportunity of becoming incredibly rich without consequences. But that is another history.

How did we get here?

At this point, one can´t help but think, “How the H did we come to this point?”

The answer, although not simple, can start by explaining that allowing the wrong group of people to seize power and later NOT doing what is necessary to force them to surrender that power.

It is incredible to see how they try (emphasis on try) to twist and bend the narrative, when we see and experience day after day the consequences of our economy becoming a huge money laundering apparatus. Day after day, I see new “business” flourishing overnight in the form of shops, all of them with the same pattern: Middle Eastern shady owners, most of them exhibiting cheap kitchen and home appliances (and anxious employees working 12-14 hours with minimum wages), and the logical question is, “who in their sane state of mind inaugurates a shop while such a situation where missiles can start flying over the narcos businesses without a warning”?

And so we arrive at the point where masks no longer work and the prefabricated speeches crumble under daily evidence.

The streets have talked with their own voice, and those streets never lie. What was once a whisper is now a shout. What was once fear is now preparation. And what was once resignation is now expectation.

There’s no turning back.

The country, with all its wounds, with all its accumulated rage, is entering an irreversible phase. It won’t be easy. It won’t be clean. But it will be necessary. Because when organized crime becomes a ruling power, when the State turns into a front for looting, and justice becomes a sad spectacle, then the people —those who have been humiliated, impoverished, and silenced— will begin to look ahead with a different gaze. I am seeing it happening, first person.

Finally the world has identified the real threat these bad guys meant, and the reaction is there.

I want to give my most sincere thanks to those who have sent some sponsorship. With two elders and a minor to take care of, without that support, we would not be just in a “tight” spot, but in a very serious situation.

Jose and his younger kid are currently back in Venezuela, after the intention of setting up a new life in another country didn’t  go well. The SARSCOV2 re-shaped the labor market and South American economy so he decided to give it a try to homestead in the mountains, and make a living as best as possible. But this time in his own land, and surrounded by family, friends and acquaintances, with all the gear and equipment collected, as the initial plan was.

  1. We appreciate the map at the top of your article because using geography helps readers better understand the issue. From reading your insightful analysis, it appears Venezuela might eventually experience a similar type of unrest that occurred in Nepal in September 2025. Keep up the great writing.
