Health is an issue that preppers usually have on a secondary list of items. Survival 101 is all about finding shelter safe from the storm, plenty of clean water to drink, foods to last “x” weeks, months, or years. Then there are defensive capabilities, as well as a power supply. And don’t we all love our gadgets!

We usually rank health at about the 85-115 range of the most important needs. But…we are all getting older, and every new decade it seems like our bodies tell us of new shortcomings. While a health scare can be stressful, it can also help you to get better prepared.

My own health scare

Personally about three years ago, I had a heart attack completely out of the blue.

My father had heart troubles, but that was from playing around in a live electric panel box and frying out part of his heart, which became weaker and weaker. So heart problems were of secondary concern for me. I didn’t really expect it would happen to me.

Once this happened, everything changed in my perspective. Being a prepper for troubles of life, from the economy, the weather, as well as health issues, I always looked for cures. Symptoms to be treated today would need to be treated again tomorrow. Therefore my reliance on pills or other special health Band-Aids were of shocking concern.

How I became better prepared and healthier.

What could I do to find answers to alleviate the repeat of these dependencies?

The first year or so I kept to the doctor-approved regimen of pills and appointments. This was something that kept us broke all the time, as we were very self-reliant and paid for healthcare out of pocket.

Trial and Error

I started reading, signing up for health newsletters, trying lots of what our fathers of the west referred to as snake oil, cure-all herbs, and other promises that this new fluid could heal anything but death. And, yes – I spent more hard earned monies. I found out I am allergic to many of the far-east cure-all herbs in the process.

But for every eight to ten trials, I came across something that really worked. And that made everything worthwhile. These few items have been life-changing. I cannot tell you how they will work for you, but can only share these ideas so you can make a little bit more evaluated guess on ending some of your health issues.

Doctors

These professionals are schooled to evaluate and find a remedy in the minimal amount of time. They are not crooks or idiots, not perfect or scoundrels, but professionals of their trade(s).

Just like I, as a contractor, follow the lead and standards of my profession here in Florida, so I have evolved and strive to be the best I can. Doctors do the same thing, keeping up on the latest research. And how much more important will both of these professions be tomorrow!

Newsletters

I have found there are a few homeopath-minded doctors and alternative medicine researchers that are taking the latest research and finding answers to many of our issues and ailments of the body. This is a great source of information.

The publications I find the most useful are those which are hand-in-hand with a sister company that actually manufacture these anecdotes. Some who love big government would argue with me, but my best advice is from someone who is willing to put their name on not only a remedy but also the product of the remedy they are touting. They will not be in business very long for snake oils. And they are constantly tweaking these remedies to be as viable as possible.

Some of the best information I have come across was when I am researching a certain health issue on Amazon and eBay books and publications. These usually go unto a list and will be evaluated maybe even a year from now. Both selling companies have lists you can make and add to. It does not bother me if it is no longer available, as it is the ideas that book or publication might stimulate in me as new ideas.

Remedies

This is where the greatest barrier will lay to your improving health. It is difficult to spend $47 or $97 for a month supply on something that “might” work. And each company, to promote initial sales in a new product, will bundle multiple bottles together, which sometimes reaches into the $400 plus mark. YOUCH!

Stay with the smaller supply. It is still an unknown whether it will work for you. Depending on your ailment and remedy, once you start taking this 30-day supply, it might take that long to show any improvements. Sometimes longer.

A trick I learned years ago, was that it is much healthier to be random in taking vitamins. This makes your body seek out nutrients in food. You now are maximizing absorption. And I often do the same with healing remedies for the body.

What cures are working for me?

Three years ago, had two stents installed. Had 90% and almost 100% blockage on the two main heart arteries. Earlier this past year, had my body filling up with water. Was scheduled for another set of stents; when the specialist doctor went up into me, my arteries were not only clean but were really clean.

The other heart issues are being worked out. Yes, these new issues to be resolved, God-willing!

Be more self-reliant about your health!

It is my hope this stimulates in you to be self-reliant even in another facet of your life. Part Two will be to address actual remedies that have worked for me, as well as Part Three will deal with Newsletters and Periodicals.

So, is it time to move your health issues, from the upper 80’s to maybe number 9, of the top ten?

To begin is half done.

  • You titled a section “What cures are working for me?” but you don’t give any details on what you actually use that cleaned up your arteries. What products did you find are worth your money, or where did find reliable information? Thanks in advance!

  • This article doesn’t convey actionable information. It would have been better had the author simply begun with what he is calling Part Two.
This is a pertinent topic for me because I spend a significant amount of money on supplements to control my arthritis. All out of pocket, no health insurance reimbursement. I completely understand why people use prescription medication, because health insurance covers unnatural remedies but not natural remedies. The best advice I can share is, if you can possibly afford it, to do your supplement shopping between Thanksgiving and New Year’s. I don’t actually spend the full price of $643.68. I spend ~$482.76, because of the ~25% holiday discounts.
    Here’s the full-price itemization that equals $643.68:
    –Dr. Mercola’s Joint Formula, 90 tablets (1 per day) for $47.67 x 4 = $190.68 a year. (This one’s critical for me.)
–Life Extension’s Krill Healthy Joint Formula, 30 softgels (1 a day) for $16.00 a bottle x 12 = $192 a year. (This one’s important for me, but I could take it every other day to stretch it out if money’s tight.)
    –Life Extension’s Super Bio-Curcumin, 60 capsules (1 a day) for $28.50 x 6 = $171 a year. (This one’s helpful for me but I could do without it if stuck for money.)
    –Life Extension’s Mega EPA/DHA, 120 softgels (2 a day) for $15 x 6 = $90 a year. (This one’s helpful for me but I could do without it if stuck for money.)

    • For arthritis try Companion 60 by Livepet, 1tsp/day. Marketed for dogs but I have had amazing results taking it myself, no pain at all.
