Yesterday it was announced that Hope Hicks, the President’s senior aide, had tested positive for COVID. And that was just the beginning.

The news that President Trump has COVID has been taking the internet by storm all day long. And now that he’s been admitted to Walter Reed Hospital, speculation continues to grow.

People have questions.

What happens if the President dies right before or right after the election? What happens if he can’t carry out his duties? All of these things would be far more simple if it wasn’t an election year – and moreover, if it wasn’t so darned close to the election.

And this illness is sweeping through our government. Not only is President Trump positive for COVID, but so is his wife, so is Kellyanne Conway, and so are Senators Mike Lee and Thom Tillis.  This morning, Senator Ron Johnson of Wisconsin also announced his positive diagnosis.

A lot of folks like to ask why we pay so much attention to current events here on a preparedness website. In this situation there are some HUGE ramifications to everyday Americans.

Here’s what we know so far.

President Trump is in a demographic that could face serious issues with this virus. We’re in the midst of not only an election but also a Supreme Court nomination process. Let’s take a quick look at this as well as the line of succession.

It’s 2020. Let’s be honest: why would we expect anything less than our election going entirely sideways?

So what happens if a candidate actually DIES during the election itself?

An even more unprecedented quagmire is this: what if a candidate – either Trump or Biden – succumbs to COVID during the election? It’s pretty late to be throwing new hats in the ring, isn’t it?

What are your thoughts?

What are your thoughts about this outbreak in the President’s inner circle? How do you think the election will be affected? Do you have any predictions, suspicions, or educated guesses? Any unanswered questions? Share them in the comments below.

  • The President is receiving top-notch medical care at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. He will miss the second presidential debate due to his COVID-19 quarantine. President Trump will probably get a boost in his support. Hopefully, this helps the President win a second term.

  • Before the election if Trunp cannot fulfill his, duties the vice-president Pence is next in line, then Nancy Pelosi, then the speaker protem i believe. .
After the election the order is president, vice president, speaker of the house and on according to thd rules of the 25th ammendnent.

  • This late in an election cycle i’d expect the person running for vice president would run for president and pick a new running mate. Hard to say with some ballots already cast. Hope they wouldn’t just hand it over to the living candidate if one died.

  • My hope has been a strong reasonable 3rd choice would have made more progress. Everyone here be honest, has this 2 party system really been good for America? Do you agree 100% with Trump and disagree 10% with Biden? We the people need to wake up to this sham and back a well option, someone that say 75% of the country would agree with. I do not know who that could be but I am amazed that America still falls for the 2 party BS system.
On that note seriously we have 100s of diet and life styles to choice from yet when it comes to our government we keep picking between left or right, not somewhere in the middle.
Personally I gave up following the government, I just prepare, raise my children and enjoy life, since something may happen, or it may not. The super preppers out there I belief if the world falls apart will regret not taking more time to enjoy life and live. When they are sitting in the retreat bunker etc. trying to survive they wont have things to talk about, like that trip to Disney world in 2018 or what ever.

    • Ric, while I lean towards your way of thinking, I still participate in the process. Many times I ask myself “why” though. Perhaps its the happy ever after in me that thinks one day it MAY make a difference. With the way our system is set up now though I would even question whether a 3 party system would work. I can see them falling in lockstep with the REPDEMS. I have wondered if term limits, getting rid of lobbyists, accountability to their true bosses (the American people), letting true capitalism work (no bail outs – businesses either sink or swim) would help. Again, the happy ever after in me thinks that would help greatly but then reality hits. I am retired military and saw a lot of positions in my career go from being held by military who rotated ever 2 – 4 years to being turned into civilian positions where folks hung out in the government jobs for eons. One of the largest bases I worked on that had become very civilianized was full of corruption and good old boy bosses. I saw all of the old guard leave but amazingly they were all replaced by more corrupt people. The people that replaced them didn’t even know some of their predecessors, but they do some of the same underhanded things these other people did. Systemic dysfunction to the mega is all I can say as I shake my head.

      • @Ric and Marti,
        I agree with you both.
Personally I think if we could get what I call the Silent Middle (and likely the sane Majority) to vote OUT the incumbent, every year, affecting our own term limits from the local, state and national level, the political landscape will look very different.
Might make the lobbying groups moot if the guy they back in the election is going to just get voted out the next term.

  • The prime minister in Canada was quarantined and he still have duties and press conferences. All the debates can be done over zoom etc like EVERYTHING else.

Honestly unless he suffers severe health issues there should be minimal disruptions.

    • Aileen, in an honest debate climate I would agree that VTC debates would work. After seeing the first debate though, with many questions still swirling about Biden and his possible audio feed, etc., I think they could more easily stack the deck against Trump.

  • Vice President Pence will assume duties if he dies. The RNC will re-conviene and most likely he will be voted in as the most likely candidate. If he wins the left will implode.

We can “what if” this to death.
What’s important is that we make the right moves to stay safe before during and after the elections.
3/4 fuel tank is empty till then. Talk with neighbors. Make plans. Get food. Stay away from stupidity. Don’t create stupidity.

I wish the President a speedy recovery. I wish the same for everyone. Just because I don’t agree with you doesn’t automatically mean I want you to die or suffer. That’s reserved for special people.

  • I wonder if they got a second test and then a third, because we all know how many false positives there are with these things. The timing of this kinda makes me think that whoever commented that he is being protected from assassinaton just may have a point …

  • Coincidences rarely happen at this level of politics. An outbreak involving 24 people (so far) seems awfully suspicious to me. Plus, all of the benefits of the fallout from this go to one side – the puppeteers, as I call them.

The three things they most needed :

    1) Pandemic fatigue was starting to set in. People were getting quite restless with the restrictions. This provides quite the shot in the arm. (pun intended) After all, “we’re all in this together.”

    2) “Sleepy Joe” looked awfully aged and feeble on that stage the other night. No way they wanted another debate. There now won’t be anymore.

    3) No way they could allow yet another supreme to be confirmed. But how to stop it? Hmmm…

Then, just maybe, if they were lucky, it might turn out being even more serious than they hoped for….

  • HCQ. He took it before. He will be fine. The leader of the free world will take every precaution. He will be fine. I believe he is still performing his duties, just from a different place.

  • Enjoyed the commentaries. History Poli-sci major.
Our system works as good as it can considering human nature. It has served us well for centuries. Don’t worry about what you have no control over…..
The White House had quite a few large events these last few weeks with no masks.
    Just a matter of time…
We have no control over these people. Only ourselves

    Scout Motto: Be Prepared

  • The election result remains at 80%+ probability (my guess) at NO CERTAINTY who really won the popular vote and NO CERTAINTY who really won the electoral college, leading to riots, insurrections and civil war.

VOTESCAM will win; the people will lose. In 2018, I watched as five or so Republican House victors lost their seats to days worth of “found” ballots and nobody cared enough to fix the electoral system. It is the End of the Republic.

Today, I read an article about food shortages and what happens if you can’t go to the government. That sentence was so casual, as in of course if you have any kind of financial difficulties you ask Nanny State.

Our Founding Fathers said democracies or republics last until the voters discover that they can vote themselves money. With these trillion-dollar deficits, we have reached that point. It is the end of the Republic.

I pray for each of you. Survive!

  • I think the president is recovering and will be back home soon. This may not have such a big effect on the election. I think people need to realize that if they vote for Biden they are really voting for Kamala Harris. Biden will not be the acting president. She will be taking over for him shortly.
