SURVIVAL Is Just About Surviving

In the world of preparedness and survival, there’s a lot of crossover with things like liberty, patriotism, and a healthy suspicion of anything that smacks of a potential loss of our freedoms. Many people in this arena feel that it’s all one big topic.

But it’s not. While it’s absolutely related to being prepared, the thing that a lot of folks on the internet forget is this:

Survival is just about surviving

Preparedness and survivalism are different and the former is more about thriving in an extended situation. I believe in a two-pronged approach of immediate survival and long-term preparedness and resilience. Today I just want to talk about survival itself. I’m not talking about long-term scenarios during which you’d be constantly on the run using this philosophy, but about immediate threats that you must handle in the moment.

When bloggers like me give advice on dealing with an emergency, we are talking specifically about how to get through it alive, whether it’s a mass shooting, a death-defying wildfire evacuation, or riots at your front door. I want to help you prepare physically – by having the right gear and supplies – and mentally – by knowing what to expect – so that you and your family survive.

But it has become difficult to write an article without filling it with disclaimers, lest the comments section be filled with irate people who want to know, “What about ….(fill in the theory)…?”

I have a simple answer for this that the ones who demand I agree with their specific theory probably aren’t going to like.

Survival is about surviving.

It’s not about politics, false flags, conspiracies, patriotism, your rights, or “how things should be.” If we lived in a perfect world, our rights really would be assured, everyone would play by a predictable set of rules, and things would be “how they should be.” Educating others on how to survive an event is not an endorsement of the event as it’s portrayed by the media. It means the author is using the event as an example that can help others if they find themselves in a similar unfortunate situation. The theory proposed in the comments may well be correct, but if in sharing that theory, you are dismissing the essential survival principles, you’re doing a disservice to those who may one day need the information.

We don’t live in that utopian world

On our side of the Matrix, which is the real world, things are just not ideal. Things aren’t always “as they should be” and rights are not always inherent. They can vanish in a heartbeat given enough opposing firepower. Knowing the truth will not necessarily set you free. While the chaos is occurring, the truth really doesn’t matter. Please note that I love a good conspiracy theory as much as anyone, and I do also don the tinfoil from time to time.

However.

If you are caught in the midst of a mass shooting event like the Las Vegas Massacre, your immediate focus should not be whether or not agents of the government are conducting a false flag event. It should not be whether a foreign agency has concocted a diabolical plot. It should not be whether there was some weird guy warning you were all going to die before the concert began.

Your immediate focus during a mass shooting should be not dying. It should be figuring out where the gunfire is coming from and getting your family to adequate cover.

That is survival, the other stuff is extraneous

Do you think you’ll suddenly become impervious to bullets or explosives if you say in the midst of the chaos, “AHA! You’re from the government! This isn’t real!” No. You’ll just get shot or blown up knowing who shot you or blew you up. That’s really not very satisfying if you end up dead.

If you are in a neighborhood that is under attack by “protesters”, your immediate focus should not be whether or not George Soros or the politician you most dislike funded this busload of angry people to your city. It shouldn’t be whether or not you have the right to fly an American flag in the midst of a mob of rabid, radicalized anti-Americans. It shouldn’t be about “the Marxists.”

Your immediate focus if you find yourself in a riot zone should be keeping your family alive and uninjured. It should be preparing a defense and hoping you won’t need to enact it. It should be arming yourself with fire extinguishers and putting out a blaze because 911 is not coming.

That is survival.

You can’t chant an incantation to dispatch the influence of the person who paid them and suddenly make the attackers all vanish in a puff of smoke just because YOU KNOW who paid them to do so. You have to face the actual problem which is a bunch of angry people who are coming for you, your family, and your property.

But some people keep missing the point of survival

Every single time, I see in the comments people who have entirely missed the point. The point is how you will get through a situation alive. For some reason, every preparedness article that mentions an event ends up splitting into two different discussions. The two conversations aren’t even apples and oranges because those are both similar enough to be fruits. They’re like apples and pogo sticks. They couldn’t be further apart.

In some ways this is harmless. But in other ways it is delusional and life-threatening. For example, if you don’t bother learning everything you can about surviving a certain type of situation because of a conspiracy theory. You have to stop getting hung up on small details. Like, whether the guy who got shot by the cops deserved it or was a saint. I can write a 4000-word article loaded with research and information. But, there’s always that one who finds one line and says, “Well, clearly you have no idea what you’re talking about because you said the earth is round when it’s obviously flat.”

Then there are the people who say that they shouldn’t have to do a certain thing in order to survive. Of course, you shouldn’t have to. But you have to read the situation. Then decide what you are going to put first, your life or your right to further enflame the angry mob.

Is it really worth it?

You have to decide if your lofty moral imperatives are really worth dying for. And, if they are, then, by all means, get blown away by the cops that want to pry the gun from your cold, dead fingers. As for me, I’ll hand mine over. Then I will go scuba diving in the lake hoping a waterproof container fell out of a boat with someone else’s unregistered firearms.

I intend to live to fight another day and I will choose my battles strategically. I’m not going to be so blinded by my devout belief in a particular conspiracy that I’m unwilling to accept that I’ve got a situation on my hands that I must deal with immediately. And, I’m not going to be so naïve that I refuse to put the safety of my loved ones before the “rights” I wish to stubbornly assert. And friends, I get it. I am stubborn. It stings if I have to take a step back in a confrontation, but it’s probably not going to kill me.

You have to prioritize the thing that is most likely to immediately kill you.

During the event, it doesn’t matter who’s responsible. It doesn’t matter if it was a set-up for some political agenda or if it was paid for by some rich dude who’s up in everyone’s business. Sometimes in this community, people can be so dismissive that those who really want to learn how to survive a violent event feel foolish. There are people who belittle valuable advice because they’re so hung up on their theories about the events.

When bullets are real, it doesn’t matter who is firing them at you or why. What matters during the event is surviving it.

  • Based on your logic I can assume you will be taking the mandatory vaccine when they come to your door so that you can “live to fight another day”? I’m not willing to take that chance….

    • That’s not what I suggested at all. Now if they come to my door armed to the teeth to force me to take it I might feel differently but that is a highly unlikely scenario. If I can live to fight another day to take care of my family, I’ll make the choice to do so. To do otherwise would leave them without my protection and to me, that is not something I’m willing to do unless it’s the only way to save them.

    • Good for you.
Only please ensure you leave all your kit in an orderly fashion so us who will live can benefit by your decision.

  • You are spot on Daisy. Noone can actually know what it feels like to take cover from actual bullets pinging by their head, till it is ACTUALLY happening. Then you ask yourself, do I want to TRY AND FIGHT BACK and increase my chances of getting hit or do I want to TRY TO EVADE and still possibly get hit.

  • Sorry , but I disagree with you. George Soros sold out his fellow religious people to “survive”. Others, like in Commie China, will rat out their neighbors to ” Survive”.

What is “wrong” with the Divided States today is the lack of morals. Morals should include loyalty to our Republic as prescribed in the Bible’s book of Romans, our family, and our fellow man. Most of all our God!

Christ put it best, the whole law can be summed up in loving our gracious Father and our fellow man.

DO UNTO OTHERS AS YOU WOULD HAVE THEM DO UNTO YOU !

    • I don’t think she meant survival even if you have to do immoral things, like ratting on neighbors, or killing them to take their food (or as food).

More in terms of being the grey man. Not getting in a yelling argument with protestors who might decide to kill you for your views, even though you have the legal right to do so. Possibly taking down the American flag or the Thin Blue Line Flag, if you find that people in your neighborhood are being attacked for flying them. Or putting up a temporary BLM sign on your house as a riot is approaching your street, even if you don’t agree with all the organization’s goals.

We all hope it doesn’t get to that, but that is what it means to survive the immediate situation, as opposed to thriving with all your rights, which may require more quiet/hidden action, or by pre-emptively moving to a safer location when possible before you’re stuck in the survival situation.

        • I understand why you feel that way, truly. I’m a rebel at heart and the idea of doing something like that is unpalatable.

However, I think for some people in some situations, hiding IS a better option. As an example, how would my teenage daughter and I fare against a mob intent on killing us or burning us out? I’d really prefer they just pass us by. My first job as a mom is to keep my kids safe. I’ll do what I must to make that happen. If that means blending in, I’ll do it.

          • I’m not against Grey but I’m a realist. There is a point to which you must abandon it and fight.
We really really really disagree on what that point is.

The thought of you smoking off a dozen scum trying to kill or worse to your daughter messes with your sense of civility.
I get it now get over it. Times have changed. Civility is fragile and breaking. Maybe later it’ll go back.

Short term is you walking through the crowd out the other side and regrouping elsewhere. You gotta carry a sign to get that done so be it.
Fixing a sign to your dwelling is not the same.
There’s a fine line between “being grey” and being a pacifist, coward and several other titles.
When you hang that sign you joined. They now own that. That means everything in it is theirs. Everything
I say this not of bravado but of experience. I say it from hatred of bullies from element size of individuals to entire armies.
The force won’t pass if the force owns the location. The force will reside. Look at the businesses in CHOP. The force didn’t pass it lived there and took what it wanted, destroyed what it didn’t and ran what was left into the ground by shutting down their operations.

You can not defend a person without a physical location to do so.
It doesn’t matter if it’s the sidewalk you and they are standing on after eating dinner, the car your driving to work, the house you all live in or your job location once you are aggressed upon you must hold that and possibly advance.
Not one army, fighter or argument was ever won just defending. At some point there has to be offense and it has to be before the reach the protected location.

This discussion is a lot like the “conflict” card game. It’s a great tool to see who can or should be in your group.
In this case I’m definitely not a match to be around most of y’all. We are just too different.

    • Actually, Jesus distorted what Hillel had said. And Hillel perhaps got his phrase from Confucius: “Do NOT unto others what you would not have done to you.” There is a profound difference in the moral impact there. Withholding actions is far less imposing on others than performing actions when the recipient may not like them. Jesus kind of botched it.

      • Jesus said this to a civilized society, about everyday life. To be applied to your neighbors and friends.
He did not apply it to times of war or civil unrest, Or even to robbers or murders that might attack you.
        That would be ludicrous.
We as a people and as a Nation are under attack from forces within and without our Nation.

  • Yup I’m not into pure survival. You will never have anything being in pure survival and will become just like the other refugees I’ve seen across the planet.
I believe if you don’t have something to hold, build off of and continue then there is no point to my preparedness.
So if it’s preparedness then I’m pretty good at it but if it’s pure survival then I’m not the guy to talk to because there will be casualties in my proximity.

    • I’m not talking about long-term situations here as much as finding yourself in the middle of an event. I guess I didn’t make that very clear. I believe in a two-pronged approach of immediate survival and long-term preparedness and resilience. 🙂 That’s what I get for writing at 2am when I have insomnia. I’ll try to edit and clarify that point. Thanks for bringing it up.

  • Ms. Luther-

That didn’t take long. I enjoyed your article precisely because it calls out our greatest mental weakness- our inability to truly live and survive in a series of moments. I think that for so many, myself included, we can wrap ourselves in surety because we have “prepared”. That preparedness offers both real and false security. We are, at the end of the day, all human animals, each driven by a set of instinctual imperatives. It is facetious of us, all of us, to believe that being “better informed” equates to a higher rate of pure survival. There is something to be said for reading the environment for threats, and anticipating responses. But survival is in the middle of all that- in its own moments.

Thank you again for a great read.

  • There are apocalyptic SHTF situations who will leave not just the direct “survivors” but also evt. offspring envying the dead. Now more than ever.
Best crave for that “utopian” situation without psychopaths f*cking everyone and everything totally up, including your worldview.
Test and take them out !!!

  • Is “Survival” worth living under tyranny? At some point we must put our lives on the line to quell the march of the psychopaths who believe they own us and want us back on the plantation.

    • Good point. Not the point of Daisy’s article, but each of us should think about what we would be willing to die for.
I would probably rather die than get a vaccine that might be The Mark of the Beast. If it is just medically unsafe, it makes no sense to die over it.
Masks–harmful, but not willing to die over that one, or even suffer much.
The wrong Presidential winner–that is not gonna happen. There will be so much vote-scam and confusion that nobody will know who won. Even the Supreme Court won’t fix that because OF COURSE Trump will do his Constitutional duty and appoint somebody. The Dems will not accept a Trump decision.
A riot–that is what Daisy is talking about. You don’t die for your “right” to express your opinion to one who is deaf.

  • Great article, Daisy.

If your company or community offers active shooter training, go. I worked in security in my company for a number of years, and because we had an “in house” police force, they ran drills on active shooter as first responders and allowed employees to participate, taking different roles. They even used a blank gun to simulate the shooting.

One employee noted that her life and that of her husband were saved at that Las Vegas shooting because of the training she received. She knew what gun fire sounded like from the blank guns, recognized the confusion in the crowd, and encouraged her husband to run for the gate before others knew what was happening.

Daisy’s right. At that moment, arm chair refereeing is not what’s needed. Knowing what to do in that moment of crisis is all you need to know.

  • It would seem to me that the best guide to this dilemma is Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maslow's_hierarchy_of_needs#/media/File:Maslow's_Hierarchy_of_Needs2.svg. ) As you can see, food, water, warmth and rest are considered to be the most basic needs. However, if you don’t survive then all of them are useless. Yet you won’t survive, even if you are well fed and warm if your safety is jeopardized.

What I find enlightening is that the Fourth level of needs includes “prestige and feeling of accomplishment”. I would suggest that todays liberals have had their safety and physiological needs so well met that they are now looking for self fulfillment and believe, however misguided, that they are making a difference in the world by proselytizing about “Black Lives Matter” and “Climate change”. This is the outcome of American families outsourcing education to institutions that are now politicized and serving their purpose rather the needs of the family.

  • I thought I had posted earlier today but do not see it. Being in a rush, I may have not have hit “Post Comment”. But if I am repeating myself please forgive.
I commented here months ago that there was a distinct difference between survival and preparedness. The later may help in achieving the former, but they are not the same.

In my view there are only two strategies towards achieving one’s survival. 1) Avoiding or escaping the threatening event or situation. 2) Eliminating the threat or situation. Neither strategy is a guarantee of success, however. In the first example you survive by quickly exiting out a rear door as the gunman enters the restaurant and begins to shoot people indiscriminately. You escaped the threat. Or, not being there to begin with because situational awareness tipped you off that it probably was not a safe place to be to begin with. Using the same example, you eliminate the threat to your survival when the gunman enters the restaurant and begins to shoot by drawing your own legally carried weapon and shooting the gunman in the head! Certainly you also ensured the survival of others as well. Even a tyranny can be eliminated through the direct action of the many although some would not survive the effort.

There are also times when a person sacrifices their own survival to ensure the survival of others. A soldier throwing himself on a grenade to save his buddies comes to mind. But the best example is Jesus Christ willingly going to the cross.

Some people seem to have an innate survival instinct. The rest of us have to work at it.

  • I think if they show up to your door armed to the teeth to give you the jab then take ’em all out because when enough people do so they will stop showing up to people’s doors armed to the teeth to give jabs to people who don’t want those jabs. At some point the fight is coming to everyone so better make your decisions today so you are ready for the unexpected moment. Concentration camps ended up full because people didn’t understand when the fight came to their door to fight back. Same with FEMA camps (fun camps as Hillary refers to them) – when they come that is your time to fight whether fair or unfair or right or wrong – it is your time.

    • Agreed! It is just Me and Mrs Me now. Hypothetical situation…if the authorities come to my door to take my guns (i’m not saying that i have any guns) and i surrender the guns to them, then I and my beloved survived, right? Or did we? What do i do when one hour later, one day later, one week later…etc…the authorities show up to take me to a re-education center? Worse, my beloved and I are in sepaerate vans and I am to never see my wife again? So much for protecting my wife!….I am lucky where I live, the local sheriff has publicly stated he will not enforce any gun confiscation plan. If I had any guns, I will not give them up…for to me and my housedhold, to live is Christ and to die is gain!

    • Agreed! Here is the proof of WHY WE MUST FIGHT:

“And how we burned in the camps later, thinking: What would things have been like if every Security operative, when he went out at night to make an arrest, had been uncertain whether he would return alive and had to say good-bye to his family? Or if, during periods of mass arrests, as for example in Leningrad, when they arrested a quarter of the entire city, people had not simply sat there in their lairs, paling with terror at every bang of the downstairs door and at every step on the staircase, but had understood they had nothing left to lose and had boldly set up in the downstairs hall an ambush of half a dozen people with axes, hammers, pokers, or whatever else was at hand?… The Organs would very quickly have suffered a shortage of officers and transport and, notwithstanding all of Stalin’s thirst, the cursed machine would have ground to a halt! If…if…We didn’t love freedom enough. And even more – we had no awareness of the real situation…. We purely and simply deserved everything that happened afterward.”

      ― Aleksandr I. Solzhenitsyn , The Gulag Archipelago 1918–1956

  • Shouldve , would’ve, could’ve . If you have mere seconds to make up your mind. Survival is it. Yeah hopefully you’ll get the luxury to be pissed later that
The police should’ve done their job
How could have this happen in society in 2020 (fill in the year)
    Seriously who would do that
    It’s damn not fair , it’s illegal.
None of that matters in the moment.
    Be dead or survive?
I’m not talking about throwing anyone under the bus.
But if you want me and my family dead for whatever reason I choose to live. To make sure my kids live and are safe.
Thank you Daisy for taking the time to write this. These types of articles are really important in my opinion.

  • Hi Daisy, I love your newsletter and I truly believe that one day your words of warning will save many lives. Keep up the good work you’re doing and fight the good fight!

Thank you and God Bless YOU,
    Mrs. Terry Jones

  • Good article. I am new to this website but I have always read your articles when they appeared on other sites. I did a lot of prepping years ago. I am getting too old to do much now, but I will still do what I can to help my children, grandchildren and other good people. Not everyone wants to be prepared even in my own family. I think they will change their minds when it is too late. It won’t happen in one single event but a general deterioration is what I expect. I still don’t want to be hungry just because I failed to keep some extra supplies on hand.

  • This is sort of a soul-searching, nitty-gritty exercise after all. Not being able to predict what I might do in the heat of the moment and living with the consequences thereafter, or what DH might do, is quite sobering.

Falling back on evasion and gray man is my first choice. Going into the fray like Rittenhouse could get me killed. So, Mr.& Mrs. Nice Guy was not a good plan.

If I’m still able to breath, out of danger and not bleeding out, then I would consider myself survived.

And grateful for the adrenaline that got me through whatever “it” is.

This was a mindy exercise Daisy. Hope you were able to sleep afterwards!

  • Here’s where there needs to be wisdom—to recognize where surrender helps with survival, and where you probably won’t survive anyways so it’s better to die fighting.

In a situation like the Las Vegas shooting where someone used a military 30 cal machine gun (it was not a bump stocked AR-15) and there was no way to counter that fire, survival means getting out of there ASAP.

If a group from the government appears at my door with the purpose of taking my weapons, giving the poison jab then taking me to a FEMA camp, I’ll try to take as many of them as I can knowing that I’ll die. But if enough people act like me, the government will run out of people willing to go out house to house, and my sacrifice will end up saving others. If enough others before me have the same attitude, the government will run out of people willing to go door to door thereby saving my life.

It will take wisdom to know when to flee, when to act passively, and when to fight. The first two options are so that one can fight another day, the third option one hopes to survive.

The highest scoring fighter pilot ace of World War II perfected the tactic of knowing when to avoid a fight, and when to go in for the kill. Not all fights are avoidable. We need the wisdom to recognize when to avoid a fight, and when to stand and fight.

    • All you guys and gals complaining about the ads, you’re using the wrong browser. Stop using the Edge browser that comes with Windows™.

I tried different computers and different browsers, and couldn’t find the objectionable ads that people like you are complaining about. I don’t have an ad-blocker anywhere on any of my computers. I even tried Firefox on Windows™ and the ads were nicely positioned after the article. Only when I tried Microsoft Edge browser on Windows™ did I finally find the ads that youall are complaining about. So before you get after Daisy, please change your browser.

      • @R.O.
Good advice, but it will fall on deaf and lazy ears.
People want everything their way right away. They cannot be bothered with things like taking the time to install a ad-blocker. Rather, they take the time to post dumb stuff.
Note: It takes about the same amount of time to install a ad-blocker as it does to post dumb stuff.

  • I already lived like that years ago when I lived in LA. I did at one time feel bullets wizz past my head. It was during the Rodney King fiasco. I was young and It didn’t bother me as much because I felt invincible lol. I live in a rural location now where me and all my neighbors have guns and we can even shoot out here. If you live in a city or even the burbs now you will only survive for a short time now. The only way to protect your family is to get the hell out and move to a rural location. Thats my 2 cents.

  • Well yeah, there is a difference imo, between “surviving” and preparedness although both are related. I view “surviving” as sort of a short term response to something that is happening such as a riot, shooting, pillaging hordes, wildfire, earthquake, flood etc. Preparedness will help you learn how to deal with these while also preparing you for longer-term needs. So they are intertwined but not the same thing.

So it doesn’t really matter WHO is shooting at you; what matters is that you know how to react and can escape in one piece. And ultimately, if an EMP is the result of an attack by N Korea, China, Russia or stateless terrorists, it doesn’t really matter. The end result is still a failed power grid. What you need to do to live without grid power is the same no matter who dun it!

As for me, I’m basically trying to go about getting prepared as much as possible while keeping my head down and not calling undue attention to myself(other than my garden which is large and has unfortunately gotten some local attention). I don’t fly any flags, post signs, wear t-shirts or hats with controversial slogans, walk around wearing camo etc. Closest I come to controversy is an American flag mask.

I resist most attempts to discuss politics, BLM, ANTIFA, the Supreme court etc in my area. Most people here don’t think like I do. Occasionally I slip up and people get pissed so what’s the point? Not like I’m going to change their minds which are made up based on what they read in the NY Times anyway.

    • I’ve a suspicion that faith is going to take a more significant role in day to day lives of believers as things get worse, and that the almighty will be making a plain distinction between those with faith……. and those without. This is right and just as he made the world, designed and made us people (who in turn ruined everything by using the gift of free will to disobey), and owns everything. So many worried about what is going to take place in the next year or month or week, ignoring the fact that EVERYTHING IS TEMPORARY, when the first death, followed by the second death for those who reject messiah Yahshuah, is scheduled and cannot be avoided. As someone who has been there, in hell you’re definitely not worrying about who is going to shoot you or where your next meal is going to come from.

Get the eternal sorted out before worrying about the temporary.

  • Nice.
However I think you missed a big point.
Like a coin, there are two sides to this and you are only seeing one of them.

The first, best rule to survival, is not to get caught in that situation!

I know everyone will say that this is just common sense, but it is not “common” anymore.
Others will try to say that this is impossible. Maybe it is, but it is still the best option.

Just because you find yourself in such a scenario, it does not mean there was not a way to avoid it.
Maybe you alone could not have prevented it, but someone else or a group of people could have.

For instance: How do you survive in the woods, with just a knife?
The best thing is not to allow yourself to be caught in that situation.
Do not go out with out adequate supplies, don’t take unnecessary risks that might put you into such a situation, Don’t go anywhere with out an EDC kit, etc.
Prevention is better than a bandaid or a cure.

This is where a lot of these Comments are coming from; (Situalional awareness and possible prevention) and it is a valid point and not to be lightly dismissed.
It is called: situational awareness for a reason.
And you, Daisy and people like Selco, promote it (and rightly so), but generally only after the fact, or after the event, (whatever it is) occurs. But it is just as important, if not more so, before the event.

Knowing what is going on, in a wider sense, can prevent you from being blindsided by more local events, like a protest or riot.
Since we know that Antifa and BLM are protesting and rioting, Nationally, you should be aware when they plan local events.
Since they are being backed by international figures, and it is happening internationally also, then going to Europe or elsewhere is not exactly a good idea either without watching out for those local events.

How to, lets say, stay safe in a riot; should always start with, Not being there in the first place!
This is similar to the concept of Bugging out. You just don’t want to be there.
( back to the coin reference, this is “Heads”)

Now, knowing what you can do, if you were not situationally aware and you let yourself be trapped in one of these scenarios, that can be useful also. (this is the “tails” side of the coin).
It takes both sides to make a whole coin.

So if we really want to talk about survival, we need to look at both sides of the coin and even the edges, not just concentrate on one side, ( the during or after the event started part.) The same goes for Prepping.

So just keep up the good work Daisy, and let the comments stand or fall where they may.

  • Great article, and dead on the money! And yes, just like you said, by reading the comments, people took one line out of the article and started a whole new discussion. I think however, some people honestly have trouble comprehending what they read. They’re not purposely trying to be contrary. Keep up the good work girl!!

  • hahaha, right away someone throws an apple in the comments… the vaccine is not relevant here genius
