THESE 20 STATES Threaten Legal Action Over the Ministry of Truth

The attorneys general of 20 states have threatened legal action against the US government unless they disband the newly formed Disinformation Governance Board.

We shared with you recently an article about the people behind the DGB, who have a history of trying to curb dissenting speech by calling it “disinformation.” We here at the OP have been the targets of censorship before and would not be surprised to see more of the same. (Here’s how we’re meeting the possibility of further oppression head-on.)

It turns out that we’re not the only ones concerned about this.

What’s being done?

In a letter addressed to DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, the Attorney General of Virginia, Jason Miyares, spoke for the AGs of 19 other states and shared his concerns about the overreach.

As the chief legal officers of our respective States, we, the undersigned Attorneys General, are tasked not just with enforcing the laws but with protecting the constitutional rights of all our citizens. Today we write you to insist that you immediately cease taking action that appears designed exclusively for the purpose of suppressing the exercise of constitutional rights.

Every American knows that the Constitution forbids the government to “abridg[e] the freedom of speech.” US Const. Amend. I. As Justice Robert Jackson wrote nearly eighty years ago, “[i]f there is any fixed star in our constitutional constellation, it is that no official, high or petty, can prescribe what shall be orthodox in politics, nationalism, religion, or other matters of opinion.” West Virginia State Bd. of Educ. v. Barnette, 319 US 624, 642 (1943).

Your recent testimony before the US House Appropriations Subcommittee on Homeland Security, however, indicated that the Department of Homeland Security, under your leadership, is doing exactly that: prescribing orthodoxy by slapping a federal-government label of “disinformation” or “misinformation” on speech that government bureaucrats, operating behind closed doors, decree to be improper. This is an unacceptable and downright alarming encroachment on every citizen’s right to express his or her opinions, engage in political debate, and disagree with the government. The Biden Administration’s latest effort to decide what speech is “acceptable” and “orthodox” combines McCarthyite speech policing with the secrecy of the English Star Chamber.

In short, you seem to have misunderstood George Orwell: the “Ministry of Truth” described in 1984 was intended as a warning against the dangers of socialism, not as a model government agency. “MiniTru” and its thuggish apparatchiks are the villains in that story, not the heroes. For the sake of our democracy, you must immediately disband the “Disinformation Governance Board” and cease all efforts to police Americans’ protected speech. The existence of the Disinformation Governance Board will inevitably have a chilling effect on free speech. Americans will hesitate before they voice their constitutionally protected opinions, knowing that the government’s censors may be watching, and some will decide it is safer to keep their opinions to themselves.

The resulting damage to our political system and our culture will be incalculable: as a democracy, our political debates and decisions are supposed to take place in the public square, where every citizen can participate, rather than in government office buildings where hand-picked and unaccountable partisan committees are insulated from public supervision and criticism.

The letter goes on to question the timing of the new Ministry of Truth (just as Elon Musk completes the purchase of Twitter with the stated goal of restoring free speech on the platform). It also calls into question the dubious qualifications of head honcho, Nina Jancowiz, who AG Miyares describes as “often in error but never in doubt.”

How will the AGs enforce this?

In a firmly worded promise, Miyares concludes:

Unless you turn back now and disband this Orwellian Disinformation Governance Board immediately, the undersigned will have no choice but to consider judicial remedies to protect the rights of their citizens.

We sincerely hope this puts a halt to the censorship efforts of the Biden administration.

  • I think more states will sign on, but threats do nothing for this regime. This regime follows through on all their actions even though they are very poorly chosen.

    A lawsuit should just be filed immediately as this is a free speech, first amendment issue, immediately. I believe more states will follow. Until we act more quickly in these amendments issues we are like sitting ducks. The GOP needs to stop dragging their feet!

  • Hooray! I’ve been very concerned that biden was doing this with no resistance. Ministry of Truth is extremely un-American and violates not only the spirit, but the also the letter of our Constitution.

    • I live in North Carolina and this state is NOT on the list. Should I move out of this state? Will it go on the list in the future? Who knows?…

      • in NC also, why isnt our AG on there, isnt he a repub? need to get dims outa carolina….dont move just make sure you vote republican!

      • Contact the NC AG and politely demand they join in – call him/her, then follow up in writing….spread the word and get as many others in your state to do the same.

        We the People are the government, and we need to make our voices heard.

        • Votes, harshly worded editorials and legal actions are all long past being useful to turn this around. Sadly we are past the point of civilized redress of grievances. It will take physical action to change our dismal path now.

            Jan 6 worked wonderfully for the false flaggers and they have been desperate to repeat it, to get Patriots to attack physically. They are VERY prepared for that.
            Your post sounds like a call for violence, and therefore I think you are a knowing and conscious enemy of freedom.

    • So what do you propose? Specifics, please. Speak plainly. No hinting. If you’re talking “direct and brutal force,” “physical action,” explain what that looks like. Who will do what to who? Do you really think that’ll get you what you want, or will it just feel good? This hinting and dog-whistling and use of euphemism is cowardly. Just what, exactly, do you think should be done?

  • You can bet that the Ministry of Truth will suppress Republican campaign ads and “news” articles too. Just another voter suppression act by this dim administration.

  • I think that since it is only 20 AG’s are signing on to this case, it is a symbol of how far gone our country is.
    It should have 50+ (US states plus all territories), AG signatures.

  • Thank God at least some of the state’s AG have the temerity to stand up against that type of tyranny. I do believe that Biden’s handlers are trying to take down America one tyrannical rule after another. If they manage to silence us, we will deserve exactly what we get.

    If our politicians cannot get this done, patriots will have to ! We will not stand for this NAZI type of propaganda control. This is exactly what Hitler’s henchmen did to the jews leading up to WW-II. This is also how they managed to convince the German populace to go along with a psychopath.

  • I learned long ago that for any project to be successful requires organization. It has been distressing for years as our rights were gradually curtailed that the American people did not stand up and put a stop to it. But it takes organization, and there was none… until now. The states must follow the example of Florida and tell the feds… “NO!”. It will take the states telling the communists where they can put all their communist rule-making. We have a much better opportunity working from the state level and for the many states to band together.

  • Here’s yet ANOTHER case of the GOP never missing an opportunity to miss an opportunity. You KNOW that if Trump had tried something like this the Donk lawsuits would have been filed before Trump’s signature was dry!

  • You in the US should look North where we in Canada are tangled with our own Orwellian government. I don’t know how it’s going to play out but we in the West are NOT going quietly, nor are we going to be suppressed by our Eastern elites.   • The US government is a lawless organization of gangs. Only “We the People” can throw the bums out. The courts will take years of doing nothing because they are compromised, as well. Elections won’t work either. Watch “2,000 Mules” and see how the gangs have taken over elections. The only rule is there are no rules… Turnabout is fair play.

  • It’s not complicated to understand. They are yelling fire, fire, so they can get you all out and raid your homes. You know that “emergency” thing that grants them access and overrides all laws. It’s a very old tactic.

    It’s their “abracadabra” that grants them direct (of course) excess to all your “stuff”. Laws, rights, property, sovereignty, and legalities won’t count and apparently, it can even override standing armies.

  • No surprise the North East states are absent, but some like Idaho, Wyoming, South Dakota, and New Hampshire are a bit surprising.

  • While I certainly appreciate AG’s banding together like this, the time for letter writing is long past. Those in power are trying to force the USA to commit national suicide by pitting us against each other…..and they are doing a pretty good job of it…..they just sit back and watch the show.

    If the AGs are going to file lawsuits in response to all this nefarious activity, then file 3000 per day against all players involved, individually and collectively, and on as many topics as are relevant….not just this one.

    If you live in one of the states listed in this article, call your Governor – every day – and strongly urge them to formally create a coalition of these states to collectively protect each state’s sovereignty – and make a public appearance together stating this. Then collectively have each State’s legislature meet in emergency session to pass a law nullifying all Federal laws violating the Constitution.

      I am sure she can be trusted to be unbiased in her editing powers.

  • I think it’s great the 20 have stood up and said NO. Unfortunately, I live in Colorado, which is overrun by the Loony Left. Our Butt Pirate Governor, Polis and his husband probably think the Ministry of Truth is a great idea.

    A few “conservative” newsoutlets were reporting that Justice Samuel Alito has been relocated to a undisclosed location for his safety.
    A few non-conservative newsoutlets reported this news as:

    However, now it appears Justice Alito was in fact moved for his safety, confirmed by local LEO.

    The question is, how would The Ministry Of Truth czar handled this? Whom would she of “edited?” Whom would of been deemed peddlers of disinformation? Would she admit to being wrong?

  • I noticed my states attorney is among those who are on the list. This is so sad that we have sunk so far as to need this kind of action against a standing(at least most of the time) president and his regime. How did people get so stupid that we ended up like this? Oh well, what’s done is done. Now the question is how to fix it. This is a start, but it needs greater momentum. The answers are truly NOT in politics, but getting out and voting could help if each state takes the responsibility to make the voting legal and real again.
