Author of The Blackout Book and the online course Bloom Where You’re Planted

If the messages in my inbox are anything to go by, a lot of people are dealing with ever-increasing anxiety about what lies ahead.

We’ve been in various stages of lockdown for almost a year now. Many of us have been separated from our loved ones for that long or longer. Many of the jobs that once seemed so secure are gone forever. We’re watching as our rights to free speech and the freedom to gather are eroding right before our eyes, like a California cliff crumbling into the ocean below. Mental health crises abound as people become more and more isolated from one another.

Financial security seems to be a thing of the past for many people. We’ve had to change our lifestyles to follow mandates and to manage our ever-tightening budgets. The supply chain is broken, possibly beyond redemption any time soon. Half the country believes that the election was illegitimate and faith in our government is at an all-time low, as they send tax dollars that we paid in by the billions to other countries, doling out only $600 apiece to Americans. We’re facing mandated medical treatments and a new administration.

It’s a stressful time to be alive. You may be wondering, “How on earth am I going to keep going if things continue to get worse?”

You may be feeling hopeless right now.

But I want you to know that I believe, eventually, things will be okay.

When all the news is bad news

It’s difficult to be living all the things I’ve described above and think about optimism. It’s hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel that seems like some kind of optical illusion that just keeps getting longer.

As someone who spends most of her day buried in the news, I completely understand this feeling of overwhelming doom. It would be impossible not to feel bothered while reading venomous comments between those loyal to partisan politics or watching rioting, destruction, and rage on the news. This is something I’ve written about previously:

I’ve been working in the alternative news industry since 2011. There have been days at I time I was glued to my laptop covering manhunts, constitutional insults, or scenes of horror. It would be a lie (not to mention rather unhinged) to say that I was unmoved by it all.

Sometimes I ended the day with such awful scenes playing through my head that my night was filled with restless nightmares replaying all that I had learned. Sometimes the last thing I wanted to do the next morning when it was time to start work was switch on that laptop and see the most recent gruesome act of hatred humans had perpetrated on one another.

But here I am, eight years later, still doing it. Still trying to make sense of it all and write things that pull people together instead of tearing them apart. Still looking for that common thread that runs between us all and hoping that more people grab onto that instead of trying to sever it.

And most of the time, I’m okay. Most of the time, I can keep from becoming terribly depressed by the awful things about which I spend my days researching and writing. I can share with you a few of the ways that I prevent the bad news from causing so much anxiety that I want to throw my laptop in the lake and live out the rest of my days, blissfully uninformed. (source)

So if you’re feeling aghast at all the things we’re witnessing, please know that you aren’t alone. It’s completely normal and honestly, what would it say about you if you weren’t upset? Basically, it would say that you’re a sociopath.

Our ability to feel compassion, empathy, shock, and fear may not sound like a bonus right now, but it’s what makes us human and what spurs the human spirit to continuously seek happiness and harmony.

How to combat chronic feelings of doom

The principles we have held dear in the United States of America since its inception are being threatened, and with them, our way of life. That’s a pretty big deal and as we watch them unfold, we’re quite reasonably horrified.

But now is not the time to be paralyzed by current events. Now is the time to take the actions that will help you and the people you love to weather what looks to be a long storm ahead.

First things first, you’ve got to get ahold of your chronic feelings of doom. You need to get your mind in check before you can take effective actions. This advice may seem trite, but if you do nothing but follow the doom, you’ll drive yourself crazy.

…You can learn to put a bit of healthy distance between yourself and the events.

  • If you are able to help in some way, whether it’s a financial donation or providing some kind of emotional support for others, that can help you to handle the event because you’re taking a positive action instead of feeling helpless
  • If you are a person of faith, you can pray for those involved.
  • If you are afraid of some event that seems to be looming, you can switch off the news and focus on preparing your home and family for that possibility.
  • If you can’t do anything for the people involved, maybe you can just do something good for somebody else, locally where you are right now. It doesn’t have to be a big thing. Grab a cup of coffee for a homeless person. Make some donations of unused clothing to the women’s shelter. Never underestimate the power of doing good in an ugly world.
  • If the rest of your family loves a passionate debate, let them know politely that the topic is really getting to you and go enjoy a nice walk while they’re having their discussion. You aren’t obligated to bear witness to their discussions if it’s causing you stress.
  • If you don’t need to be on social media for work, then stay away from it. That toxicity won’t do you any good. If you must be on it, then use the “hide” function to keep certain people out of your newsfeed. Use the “block” feature in groups that you visit if there are people you find particularly negative and stressful.
  • Spend time outdoors. There’s nothing more healing to your spirit than Mother Nature. Take a sunrise walk and listen to the birds. Go to the park with your dog or your kids. Focus on the here and the now.

Most of all, do your best to surround yourself with kindhearted people who aren’t going to badger you about the event in an effort to make you see their point of view. And that means in the real world as well as the virtual one. (source)

That last part about the people you surround yourself with is particularly important. A popular quote in the entrepreneurial world is by Motivational speaker Jim Rohn, who said that we are the average of the five people with whom we spend the most time. But that isn’t just true for business owners. It’s true for all of us because attitudes are contagious.

You don’t have to spend all your time in an echo chamber but focus your energy on people who respect your opinions and treat others kindly. If you only spend time with negative people, you’re bound to feel the same way. And as Selco warns us, the worse things get the smaller your circle should become.

What can you control?

A really big thing for me is to target the bulk of my energy toward things I can control. I can’t stop people from rioting or looting, I can’t change the outcome of the election, and I can’t influence the decisions that are being made in government right now. But, I can control my response to it and I can control things in my own circle. I can get better prepared to meet the future.

Here are a few suggestions for things that are within your power to control.

  • Find some normalcy. Go back to old routines, traditions, and norms and see how you can modify them for your current situation, whether you are hampered by a lack of money or by local mandates. Here are a few ways to find some REAL normalcy while the world is burning around us.
  • Get better prepared. I always feel best when I can be productive and do things that have real value. I’m not much for watching mindless television or shopping as entertainment. I like to be busy creating, fixing, growing, or preparing. Even if you have no extra money to put toward your preparedness efforts there are still a lot of things you can do to increase your resilience.
  • Improve your fitness. One thing you’ll never regret doing is becoming more fit and healthy. If you find yourself out of work or spending more time at home these days, figure out a fitness plan that will work for you. There are tons of videos available for free on YouTube with things like calisthenics, yoga, or other home workouts. Lace up your shoes and go for a walk. I walk every day, rain or shine, and do yoga. As I improve my strength, flexibility, and endurance, I know that I am improving my chances if I find myself in a scenario in which things get bad.
  • Learn something. Learning a new skill keeps your brain and body busy, which can help counter racing thoughts of worrisome situations. Try learning a language, going shooting (if you live in an area where you can safely do so), getting your ham radio license, or herbalism. All of these things heavily cross over to preparedness skills and give you something that is within your control to do. Some preppers really need to stop shopping and start learning.
  • Produce something. I’ve written many times about how we have become a nation of consumers instead of producers. Producing things improves your skills, saves you money, and can provide you with much-needed distraction. Gardening, crafting, hunting, foraging, building, food preservation, sewing, or fishing are just a few examples of ways that we can produce something to make our lives better.
  • Do enjoyable things. It may seem frivolous, but schedule in some time for fun. It can really ease the burden of all the things going on in the world. One benefit to all the time at my condo is that I read a whole lot more, a pleasure that I had been “too busy” for previously. For you, this might be a family movie night or a game night. The beauty of the internet is that we can connect with people from all over to have a conversation or play some games. I currently live near the beach and walk there most days to sit and listen to the ocean. Life is meant to be enjoyed so don’t feel like doing fun things is counter to a prepared lifestyle.

You get the idea. We just need to find some things that we, personally, can do to improve our current situation instead of dwelling on that which is out of our control.

Things will probably get worse before they get better.

In the spirit of radical honesty, I have to be 100% clear when I say that I believe things will probably get worse before they get better. Tempers are flaring, illness has overwhelmed hospitals and made access to non-Covid healthcare nearly impossible, and these politicians seem intent on shutting down the economy.

We won’t get through this unscathed.

That doesn’t mean we won’t get through it though. Throughout history, people have found themselves living through horrifying times and wondering if things would ever get better. The Revolutionary War, the Black Plague, the Civil War, famines, droughts, wildfires, internment and concentration camps, brutal dictatorships, the Balkan Wars, the Spanish Flu pandemic…all these things have happened in the history of the world. During them, I imagine the people living these events thought many of the same things we’re thinking today. And obviously, not everyone survived these events or they wouldn’t have made such an impact on history. In that way, it’s the same as our current situation. There have been and will be losses that we’ll grieve forever.

But there will be a turning point, a moment when finally you can see that light at the end of the tunnel getting closer, a time when you laugh again without grief, stress, or fear underlying it. And then you will realize that you survived and you’re okay.

Our nation was built by tough people who were determined to be independent of a leadership they did not believe represented their best interests. We are a still country of rugged individualists, despite all the efforts to water down our self-reliant natures via the school system and the media. You are one of those people or you wouldn’t be on this website and that’s why I believe that, eventually, you will be okay.

Things look pretty bad right now, and truthfully, they are. We’re as close to a civil war as I recall ever seeing it in my lifetime. Neighbor is against neighbor. Friends are turning into foes. Children are snitching on their own parents. It’s a dark time in our country.

But I still believe that there are enough of us who are determined to survive to right this ship. It may not be this week, this month, or even this year. But optimism is at the very heart of preparedness, and I believe with all my heart that the resilient will survive and that one day, things will be good again. That “good” may look very different than what we’re used to but we will adapt and we will thrive. That’s what we do.

America might be down right now, but don’t count her out.

  • Hi Daisy, Thanks for this encouraging article. Sometimes we get too close to the action and need to step bag a bit and take stock. Without diminishing the evil and horror of the past we can reflect an ask the questions: Where is the brutal Babylonian empire, where is the world conquering Alexander the Great, Where are those evil, mad, Roman emperors, Where are the Mongol hordes, Where is the British empire of Colonialism that spanned the world, Where is the Ottoman empire. Where is Hitler and Stalin and Pol Pot? They have gone. Nothing lasts especially evil men and their schemes to become Godlike. Everything comes to pass even us and that is why we seek immortality in some way either through preparing and teaching our children and grandchildren, and/or by trusting in our Creator to save and deliver us. Their is great wisdom in the verse to “be as wise as serpents and harmless as doves”. Perhaps this is the way as we patiently wait for this evil ‘come to pass’.

  • My GGGGG-grandfather did not fight the British to so a sore loser could incite so-called “patriotic” americans take up arms against our country.

    • So the GGGGG-granddaughter supports corrupt politicians and oligarchs altering an elections to put a puppet in the presidency? Hard to believe that the GGGGG-Granddad supports that position.

  • No matter what’s going on you almost always can find something to be thankful about. The trees, nature, food to eat, clothes to wear, a close friend , the list is endless. Also learn to smile. Just the act of smiling has health benefits, and will lift others spirits. You don’t have “feel” like it. The benefits will still be there. You have some great ideas ????.

  • For roughly 18,000,000 Americans, things are never going to be okay again. As you should be aware, when the “new administration” seizes power January 20, those who own what the leftist politicians refer to as “assault rifles” will be subject to registration of each weapon and taxation of each weapon to the tune of $200.00 each, just as machine guns are registered and taxed. Magazines for said weapons will also be taxed at the rate of $200.00 each–unlike machine guns, whose magazines are neither registered or taxed. In my case, that $15,000.00 in taxes suddenly owed. Of course, we have the option of allowing ATF to seize our honestly and honorably, lawfully acquired constitutionally guaranteed property and destroy it. Alternatively, we can refuse taxation and registration, and instead permit ourselves to be imprisoned for 10 years per untaxed/unregistered magazine and weapon, or we can resist arrest, and be killed. I’m missing the “okay” part of this…

    • Leonard: That figure alone represents civil war.

Solzhenitsyn told about a real regret in the Gulag—if people hadn’t been so worried about their own lives, but had been willing to fight back against the KGB as they went door to door to arrest people—yes some of those who resisted would have died instead of rotting in the Gulag, but the KGB would have been wiped out. If the Biden administration thinks that it can send the ATF to go door to door to get unregistered AR-15s, SKSs and if even a fraction of those 18 million love their community and the Constitution more than their own lives, therefore resist, shortly there will be no ATF left. Once some resist, that will encourage others to resist as well. Once resistance is widespread, that’s civil war.

Like you, I see no upside to this.

While I don’t have any of those, I remember “First they came for …………”

      • The actual quote from Solzhenitsyn is:
“And how we burned in the camps later, thinking: What would things have been like if every Security operative, when he went out at night to make an arrest, had been uncertain whether he would return alive and had to say good-bye to his family? Or if, during periods of mass arrests, as for example in Leningrad, when they arrested a quarter of the entire city, people had not simply sat there in their lairs, paling with terror at every bang of the downstairs door and at every step on the staircase, but had understood they had nothing left to lose and had boldly set up in the downstairs hall an ambush of half a dozen people with axes, hammers, pokers, or whatever else was at hand?… The Organs would very quickly have suffered a shortage of officers and transport and, notwithstanding all of Stalin’s thirst, the cursed machine would have ground to a halt! If…if…We didn’t love freedom enough. And even more – we had no awareness of the real situation…. We purely and simply deserved everything that happened afterward.” It’s from Gulag Archipelago–I read this some years back, and every American needs to read it now, as it’s likely an accurate depiction of America’s future…

  • One way to practice one’s marksmanship is to get an air rifle. The most economical is a .177 caliber. Pellets are still available at low prices and a shooting range can be set up in one’s backyard. I was told that if one can shoot a “springer” accurately, one can shoot any rifle accurately.

These air rifles are not toys and can kill, so be careful and make sure those pellets don’t go where you don’t want them to go.
